Ahhh the season is over, and yet again the Patriots are World Champions (sigh). Now comes the offseason! Scouting combine, and draft talk, including mock drafts! Here is my first projection of the 2017 draft in the first round.
- Cleveland Browns- Myles Garrett EDGE Texas A&M- The only QB that seems to be projected to be a franchise type of QB right now is Mitch Trubisky from UNC. The Browns also have the 12th pick in the first round as well so it’s possible they could use that pick on a QB. Garrett is flat out the best player in this draft, and the Browns need talent period, there is slim picking on the team.
- San Francisco 49ers- Johnathan Allen DT/DE Alabama- If the 49ers don’t pick up Jimmy Garopollo or Kirk Cousins in the offseason, the pick here will be Trubisky. I’m going to predict that they’ll at least get Garopollo and go BPA. Allen is clearly the next best player in this draft after Garrett, who the 49ers wish they could get. John Lynch gets himself a great piece to have, and will have a great young D line with Allen, Armstead and Buckner.
- Chicago Bears- DeShone Kizer QB Notre Dame- Da Bears’ get their guy at QB in Kizer. Jay Cutler needs a change of scenery. Assuming that they are able to get rid of Cutler this offseason, Kizer will likely come in and start right away and hopes to turn the Bears’ fortunes around. Kizer really shoots up draft boards after an impressive combine.
- Jacksonville Jaguars- Marshon Lattimore CB Ohio State- The Jags could get two bookend corners for years and years to come with Ramsey and Lattimore, shoring up the secondary. I would say Lattimore is the best CB in a loaded CB class.
- Tennessee Titans (from LAR)- Jamal Adams S LSU- Adams is a great fit here for Tennessee as he is one of the best players available still and also will fill a position of need for the Titans as well. Remind me of a mix of Landon Collins and Eric Berry. I think the Titans would be okay with that.
- New York Jets- Dalvin Cook RB Florida State- The Jets need playmakers. No QB is worth taking here in my opinion. Fournette has been compared to Adrian Peterson by some. Fournette is a great pick here.
- Los Angeles Chargers- Malik Hooker S Ohio State- Hooker moves back up into the top 10 as he has shown he is a rare prospect at Safety like his counterpart Jamal Adams. The Chargers need help on D and Hooker would be a great pickup here.
- Carolina Panthers- Solomon Thomas DE Stanford– The Panthers get a legit pass rush threat in Solomon Thomas. He can come in right away and provide a nice pass rush upgrade to their D-Line, especially with the impending loss of Charles Johnson. Thomas, Ealy and Addison will provide a great pass rush and get the Panthers back on track again where they were a couple years ago.
- Cincinnati Bengals- Derek Barnett DE Tennessee- The Bengals had trouble getting to the passer this year, and bringing in a guy like Barnett will help rejuvenate guys like Dunlap and Atkins to their Pro-Bowl form. Michael Johnson is better suited to be a situational pass rusher.
- Buffalo Bills- Mike Williams WR Clemson- Williams joins up with his former teammate Sammy Watkins in Buffalo to create a prolific 1-2 punch for whoever the Bills QB may be next year, likely Tyrod Taylor again though. This will definitely be a need if Robert Woods leave as a FA, and he is better suited as a slot guy anyways.
– New Orleans Saints- Reuben Foster LB Alabama- The Saints could definitely use help on defense, and to get a guy like Reuben Foster to be the leader of the defense for years to come would be a great pickup here. He will come in and start right away at MLB and let Craig Roberston move to the outside.
-Cleveland Browns-Leonard Fournette RB LSU- The Browns just need flat out talent on this team. Some would argue Fournette is better than Dalvin Cook, but after a sub-par combine and coming in “overweight,” the Browns sprint up to the podium to select Fournette. The Browns need to keep building their talent up and then should look to draft their franchise QB in 2018, or maybe in the 2nd round of 2017 if they like one enough?
- Arizona Cardinals- Mitch Trubisky QB North Carolina- Trubisky finds the perfect landing spot for himself! Trubisky will be Carson Palmer’s heir apparent and will take over for him after Palmer retires, which could likely be after next season. Couldn’t run into a better situation for the young QB.
- Philadelphia Eagles (from MIN)– Corey Davis WR Western Michigan- Davis is a top tier talent and a great grab here for the Eagles who are starving for a weapon for Carson Wentz to throw to. Jordan Matthews will move back into the slot with the pickup of Davis, and hopefully DeSean Jackson?
- Indianapolis Colts- Jabrill Peppers S Michigan- The Colts are looking for playmakers on defense with desperation. They don’t have one player on defense that anyone would consider a Pro Bowl caliber player other than maybe Vontae Davis. Peppers comes in and start at Safety for the Colts and provides some great leadership also.
- Baltimore Ravens– Sidney Jones CB Washington- The Ravens need help in the secondary and Tabor will come in and start on the other side of Jimmy Smith. They could also use a young pass rusher to eventually replace T-Sizzle or Elvis Dumervil, but the need for a CB outweighs the need for a young pass rusher.
- Washington Redskins- DeShaun Watson QB Clemson- It’s starting to seem more and more likely that Kirk Cousins won’t be back next year. So if he does wind up being traded, they will need a replacement. Watson comes in to a good situation in Washington where he has weapons on offense and a great offensive line also. Colt McCoy is not a starter.
- Tennessee Titans- Teez Tabor CB Florida– The Titans are going to be a lot of people’s picks to win the AFC South. Tabor is a great pick here that fills a need at CB. The young secondary of the Titans is sured up with the picks of Adams and Tabor for years to come.
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers- O.J. Howard TE Alabama- Cameron Brate is your solid run of the mill TE, but O.J. Howard has the potential to be a Pro-Bowler at the next level. Howard could come in and provide a legit TE combo with Brate, and also take coverage away from Mike Evans and gives Jameis Winston another weapon also!
- Denver Broncos- Ryan Ramczyk OT Wisconsin- The Broncos need offensive lineman badly. Ramczyk comes in and starts right away at LT for the Broncos for whoever may be at QB.
- Detroit Lions- Marlon Humphrey CB Alabama- The Lions need desperate help on the other side of Darius Slay in the secondary. Nevin Lawson is better suited to be a nickel-back, so the pick of Humphrey here will help sure up the Lions secondary.
- Miami Dolphins- Zach Cunningham LB Vanderbilt- With the likely loss of Jelani Jenkins, the Dolphins will need to replace him. Cunningham is a GREAT value at this point in the first round, he grades out to be a top 15 pick. Cunningham could be a guy to help run this defense for years to come.
- New York Giants- Cam Robinson OT Alabama- The Giants desperately need help along the offensive line especially at OT. Robinson can come in right away and start at RT and help the Giants give a more balanced attack. This a nice value for the Giants here.
- Oakland Raiders- Christian McCaffrey RB Stanford- Why not give Derek Carr another weapon? Oakland will run to the podium to select McCaffrey to get their Reggie Bush in his prime type of player here. Just give the ball to him and he’ll take it. The Raiders offense will be extremely explosive next year with the pick of McCaffrey.
- Houston Texans- Patrick Mahomes II QB Texas Tech- Im sure the Texans fans would be happy with anyone else at QB besides Brock Osweiler. Mahomes can come into a nice situation where there is a lot of talent on the team and could possibly start right away if the Texans still don’t feel Osweiler can be servicable while Mahomes learns the NFL.
- Seattle Seahawks- Garrett Bolles OT Utah– Russell Wilson was running for his life lat year, and didn’t have a leg to run on for part of the season. They need to do a better job protecting the franchise, and picking the best available offensive lineman here in Bolles is a great pickup.
- Kansas City Chiefs- John Ross WR Washington- If the Chiefs add another weapon to their offense, they could be a legitimate threat to take down the Patriots in the AFC next year. Ross gives them another speedy WR on the outside to go along Maclin and Hill.
- Dallas Cowboys- Taco Charlton DE Michigan- The Cowboys have the weapons they need on offense, now all they need to do is fill out their defense. Randy Gregory is a bust, DeMarcus Lawrence is a good player, but they don’t have anyone on the other side of him. Charlton will fill in nicely as a 4-3 defensive end in this league and would be a great pick here.
- Green Bay Packers- Tre’Davious White CB LSU- This is a pretty simple pick here. The Packers pass defense was brutal last year, and even with Sam Shields returning, Damarious Randall could use some competition, and Ladarius Gunter and Quintin Rollins are backups it seems. White is the best available CB on the board at this point and a first round talent also.
- Pittsburgh Steelers- Haason Reddick LB Temple- The Steelers get their guy to replace Lawrence Timmons on the inside, who will likely leave via free agency. Reddick is a rising prospect who looked great at the Senior Bowl. Typical Steelers type of player i’d say.
- Atlanta Falcons- Takkarist McKinley DE UCLA- The Falcons probably sure wish they could of gotten to Tom Brady towards the end of the Super Bowl this year. Getting another pass rusher with Vic Beasley will maybe put the Falcons over the hump and could see them hoisting the Lombardi next year with everyone on offense coming back next year also.
- New England Patriots- Forrest Lamp OG Western Kentucky- The Super Bowl champs get themselves some help along the offensive line to help the GOAT out for the rest of his years, who knows how long that will be at this rate.Typical Patriots pick here, picking someone unexpected, then the guy winds up being like Logan Mankins most likely.
